Peter uses black Maire for his carving. The Kotiate, the Patu and the Wahaika that he makes are traditional Maori weapons, not toys or decorations. They were used in hand-to-hand fighting. They are highly polished, very sharp, and any figure or face carved on the weapon is intended to inspire fear.
