Caitlin Moloney
Caitlin Moloney was born in Townsville (north Queensland, Australia) and spent most of youth in Brisbane. She has travelled around Australia, spending time on the Murray river and in the Kimberleys in north west Australia. Caitlin has spent the past three years living in the Coromandel. Her intention was to travel the length of NZ to explore this stunning country, meeting inspiring people on the way…but that didn't happen. One of her first stops was the Coromandel, and she never quite managed to leave the beautiful peninsula!! Caitlin has a studio at 'Driving Creek Railway and Potteries', a wonderfully inspiring environment where she can be and work with other artists. Clay is a relatively new medium for her and she has learnt a great deal from the local ceramic artists. Caitlin came across making ceramic tiles quite by chance. "I was at a friend's studio and he handed me some clay to play with. I made a small selection of different shaped tiles, ended up making some plaster moulds, and here I am still making them! I love that the tiles are merely a canvas to work on. I absolutely adore colour, design and texture. As long as I am doing these three things I am happy!" Caitlin believes it is inevitable that you are inspired by such a rich and stunning landscape as the Coromandel and New Zealand. It leeches into your work and comes out in suprising little ways… "I often don't even realise it happening. I don't define myself as a potter, as I am open to using any number of mediums, and have worked with metal, wool, fabric, and painting in the past. Colour is a huge passion for me and I love using deep, exotic and striking combinations. This comes from deep inside and it's a thrill to see it happen in front of me." Art is clean and pure and powerful. It stands alone.
